Awareness

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in the United States.  One in six American men will develop prostate cancer in the course of his lifetime.  This year alone, 232,000 new cases will be diagnosed - more than breast cancer.  These sobering facts led to September being recognized as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Though the precise cause of prostate cancer is unknown, the following factors may increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer:

  • Age:  More than 75% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 65
  • Skin Color:  African American men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than white Americans
  • Nutrition:  A diet higher in animal fat may add to the risk
  • Family history:  Genetic factors may predispose one as being at high risk

Talk to your provider today about screening for prostate cancer.  Prostate cancer screening consists of two examinations.  A PSA or prostate specific antigen is a blood test that measures your PSA levels.  The second exam is a physical exam of the prostate called the Digital Rectal Exam, or DRE.  The exams are done together to increase the accuracy of the diagnosis.  The right age to start PSA testing depends on your level of risk.  For the general population, annual screenng should start at the age of 50.  Men with one risk factor generally should start screening at age 45 and men with more than one risk factor should begin testing at age 40.  Each patient differs, therefore it is important to discuss your individual risk factors and screening with your provider.  These screenings can be done during a physical examination or through a separate appointment.  Call today to schedule an appointment!  952-831-1551.
